Press it too hard on one side, without taking time to check, and suddenly you dread an app that used to be fun.

There’s no shortage of hype surrounding the idea of “cracking the algorithm,” and truth be told, a great deal of that stuff is merely old information presented as insider information. There are however some things that really have worked for me, as well as some behaviors with regard to using screens that have kept me from giving up completely by the eighth month mark.

What actually seems to move the needle on TikTok

The algorithm rewards attention, plain and simple. Not likes, not follows — how long someone actually watches, and whether they watch it again. I learned this the hard way after spending a month obsessing over hashtags and tracking Celebian TikTok views that did basically nothing.

A few things I keep coming back to:

The first two or three seconds carry way more weight than people admit. I used to open with a slow intro — “hey guys, so today…” — and my retention graphs looked like a cliff. Cutting straight to the interesting part fixed more than any hashtag strategy ever did.

Say your keywords out loud in the video, not just in the caption. TikTok’s search function has gotten scary good at reading captions and even transcribing speech, so if your video is “about” something, actually say the thing.

Longer videos (I’m talking 60-90 seconds) have quietly outperformed my quick 15-second clips for months now, as long as people actually stick around. A long video nobody finishes does nothing for you — it’s the combination that matters.

None of this is magic. It’s mostly just paying attention to your own analytics instead of guessing.

On posting schedules and not losing your mind

I used to think I needed to post every single day. Three videos a week, sometimes five during a “growth push.” It worked, sort of, but I was burnt out by week six and my ideas started feeling stale and interchangeable.

What’s worked better is batching — filming four or five videos in one sitting and spacing out the posting over the following week or two. I have also decided to stop trying to follow every trend that comes out and choose three things that I really have an interest in discussing. While it is much less glamorous than jumping on board every sound, it has resulted in my page feeling genuinely like my own and being much easier to maintain.

And sometimes I’ll simply edit an older video which was somewhat successful, and try to put a new twist on it. No glamour here either, but surprisingly enough, it works quite well.

Search is quietly becoming the whole game

Here’s the thing nobody tells you early on: a huge chunk of Gen Z is using TikTok the way older generations use Google. They’re typing “best budget skincare for oily skin” straight into the TikTok search bar. If your content answers real questions, it can keep pulling in views for months after you post it, long after any trending sound has died.

I started checking the autocomplete suggestions in the search bar before filming anything — it takes maybe two minutes and it shows me what people are actually searching for, which is often not what I assumed. Then I make sure that phrase actually appears in my on-screen text and in my caption, not buried in some clever wordplay.

Some of my highest-performing videos from six months ago are still getting views today because of this, which never happens with trend-chasing content.

I also paid for growth once — mixed feelings

I’ll be honest, I tried one of those growth-boost services early on — Celebian, specifically, for a short campaign of real TikTok views on a launch video — mostly because I was impatient and wanted an initial push before the algorithm had any data to work with. It did help the video get seen by more real people faster, which then fed into organic reach a bit. But I wouldn’t treat it as a shortcut to an audience. It got me a spike, not a community. The comment section and the actual conversations came later, from doing the unglamorous stuff below.

Screen time is a real problem, and I’m not great at it

I turn my phone’s app limits on every night at 9pm now. Not because I’m disciplined — I’m really not — but because without the hard cutoff I’ll “just check analytics real quick” and lose forty minutes to doomscrolling my own comment section. I also keep my actual filming phone separate from the one I use for texting friends, which sounds excessive until you realize how much creation blurs into consumption when it’s the same device in your hand at 11pm.

Notifications are mostly off. I check the app maybe three times a day on purpose instead of forty times by accident. It’s a small thing but it’s probably done more for my mental state than any content strategy has.

Building an audience that actually sticks around

Metrics are easy to chase and hard to feel good about. What feels better, weirdly, is replying to comments — sometimes with a full video response if someone asks a good question. Those response videos have occasionally outperformed my “planned” content, which still surprises me a little.

I also just ask people things. Not in a forced, marketing-class way, but genuinely — “should I do a part two of this?” People like being asked, and it turns out they’ll tell you exactly what to make next if you let them.

The burnout thing, again, because it matters

I mentioned hitting a wall around month eight. What got me out of it wasn’t a new strategy — it was taking two full days off a week where I didn’t touch analytics at all, and finding something to do with my hands that had nothing to do with content. For me it was, of all things, learning to bake bread badly. Doesn’t matter what it is. The point is having something that isn’t measured by a view count. I also stopped checking my numbers daily. Weekly, maybe. Daily fluctuations used to wreck my mood for no good reason — a slow Tuesday doesn’t mean anything, but it felt like it did at the time. Finding creative balance in life made all the difference.

Wrapping up

None of this is a formula, and I’d be lying if I said I have it fully figured out even now. Some weeks I post four times, some weeks I post once and don’t feel bad about it. What’s changed is that I don’t let the app run my nervous system anymore. Finding digital balance and achieving growth is nice. Not hating your job is nicer. If you can get both, even loosely, you’re doing better than most people I know in this space.

It’s been about two years since I started producing short-form videos on a full-time basis, and there’s one piece of advice that I’d have liked to get right at the beginning: growth and burnout are essentially the same muscle.
